Bourbon barrel aged imperial stout by one of Slovenia’s finest, or at least internationally most renowned, craft brewers; from tap at BrewDog Brussels (for a measly 10,50 € per 25 cl…). Yellowish beige, moussy, opening, shred-lacing, somewhat irregular but generally stable head, black robe with thin burgundy edges. Aroma of hot chocolate sauce, vanilla-scenting oak wood, almond, cappuccino, indeed bourbon, toffee, hazelnut purée, cinnamon, caramel sauce, note of varnish or furniture wax. Sweet onset (candied dates, raisin) with slightly sourish edge (ripe blackberry – but very subtle), refined but very active fizz in a thick yet deliciously smooth, oily body; layers of toffee, black chocolate, pecan nut pie and latté macchiato ensue, bittersweet but more sweet than bitter, becoming more deeply chocolatey in the end, as well as picking up some coffee-like roasted bitterness. Still, it is the bourbon that takes over eventually, adding to the overall bittersweet and vanilla-tinged effect, with lots of woodiness, warmth and booziness – though all in all, the booze seems to know its place in the hierarchy, as it never really dominates the malty flavours too much, no matter how present it may be. This beer retains a remarkable drinkability for its style – but loses nothing in richness and unctuousness. An ‘old’ American idea executed very well in Eastern Europe.

Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 21.12.2032; abv listed as 11%; blend 2021). Dark brown with minimal off white head. Mild wood, touch of wood glue, light roast and booze, feint hint of chocolate. Nothing really comes across as specifically rum-like. Just okay, overall.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours pitch black, with a tiny, rough film of a head. Sweet roast nose, getting a mellow feel from the rum. Rich body, completely flat, sweet roast, raisin and very intense, almost juicy rum notes. Usually I don't find that rum adds an awful lot, but here it certainly does. Nice one - but could definitely use some carbonation. 180219
