A classic Irish beer style enhanced by aromatic American hops. Its aromas of coffee, along with aromas reminiscent of chocolate were created by a combination of six different malts. Blended with them, and taking the beer to a new level, are aromas of pine and citrus fruits brought on Amarillo and Simcoe hops.

33cl bottle via my father and Beer52: BB 21st April 2022. Drank at home on 17th September 2021. Poured into my old Gordons thistle shaped glass it looked good (all dark beers look good it that glass). Very black, tan topping. Singed malty nose and taste, coffee, liquorice, leather, a milky hint with a chocolate twist, mini hop traces for some balance.

[33cl bottle from Beer52.] A glossy black pour with a fast fading tan head; tarry aroma; smooth and velvety in the mouth with earthy well roasted malts nicely balanced by piney resinous hops; then a blend of coffee, licorice and chocolate in the finish. Different and enjoyable.

Bottle from Beer 52. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small cream head. Roast malts mixed with chocolate in the aroma. In the mouth it starts off smooth and creamy but very quickly becomes bitter with a flood of liquorice. Dark fruits and chocolate offset this to some extent. Slight hoppiness in the finish. A pretty decent stout.

Creamy tan head left a spotty cover on a mahogany coloured still body. Tobacco, nutty & malt aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & short on the back. Malt, nutty, tar, woody & coffee tastes with a bitter hoppy finish. Good one.

Bottle, 0.33l. Deep brown, almost black pour. One finger frothy beige head, short lasting. Minimal lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, roasted, notes of cocoa, chocolate and coffee. Light body, medium carbonation, lively. Average mouthfeel and texture, lightweight, moderately fizzy, easily drinkable. Roasty bitter taste. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, chocolate and coffee. Fruity background, nicely balanced hop character, mild citrus notes. Medium lasting finish, dry, roasty, lingering bitterness. Tasty.

2017 notes. Black with ochre tint. Small beige to tan head. Good retention. Hoppy-roasty balance. Hops present throughout, moderately hoppy, citrusy. Light roasty and toasty. Prominent roasty flavour, slightly harsh or burnt, balance towards malts. Lasting dry finish. Very creamy and soft texture, medium body, oft carbonation.
