Materfamilias is Latin for ‘female head of the house.’ No other beer we make commands as much attention and devotion as she. From the brewhouse to the barrels, your Mother’s remains at the service of this exquisite imperial stout. Roasted malt brings rich flavors of chocolate and dried fruit. In the aging process, the beer’s interaction with the wood of bourbon, rye whiskey, rum, and brandy barrels dictates the composition of the final blend. Materfamilias cannot be rushed. It cannot be forced. It brooks no compromise. The result is a stout of such complexity and nuance that you, too, will recognize the authority of your Materfamilias.

Bottle shared by Countbeer, split with Thompson @ weekly tasting. Opaque pitch black color, average to medium sized dark brown head. Aroma is malts, dark malts, strongly bourbon, rhum and brandy come through as well, a hint of coconut, quite some vanilla but in a good way (since I normally don’t like it when a beer has too much vanilla). Taste is pretty much the same: bourbon, rhum, brandy slightly, vanilla in a good way, dark malts, raisins and a suitable bitterness. Medium body, average carbonation. Pretty damn good!

Black with brown edges. Small tan head. Molasses, burnt brown sugar, chocolate. Lots of rich roasted malt flavor. Sweet with some nice booze kick. Some vanilla and coffee. Sherry, bourbon barrel sweetness. It’s a bit muddled but there’s a lot of nice stuff going on. Mild oak. Long roasty, sweet finish. Low-ish carbonation. The alcohol heat is warm and nice. Very good imperial stout.

Bottle: Purple-black with a tan ring. Bourbon, dark fruit, chocolate aroma. Heavy, sweet, dark chocolate/brandy flavor. Black cherry, raisin, Really thick, woody.... Initially great, but then it just starts to taste like fudge and booze.....

Bottle. Bourbon, sherry, raisin, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Sweet alcohol (bourbon and brandy dominate), wood, light chocolate malt, and moderately bitter herbal alcohol flavor. Sharp acidic rum finish. The liquors blend well but then overwhelm the base beer. Interesting but too much.

12 oz. bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out a load of different notes, especially raisins, rum and liqueurs, followed by cocoa nibs -- man, this is complex with almost too many layers. Flavour is decadent and complex, with loads of different barrels, with rum, bourbon, liqueur, cocoa and raisins. Simply listing the flavours doesn't do this justice, as the mix of them is amazing -- rum and raisins finish this off. Slight alcohol burn as well. Phenomenal stuff.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you bytemesis! Pours reddish black with a small dark chocolate brown head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, burnt raisins, caramel, vanilla fudge, salty soy sauce, sherry, roasted coconut, banana bread, sweetened coffee and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, moist soil, charred wood, brown sugar sweetened dark roast coffee, raisins in rum, sherry, vanilla fudge, caramelized almonds, coconut milk, banana bread, cookie dough, hay and very subtle hints of iron. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, round and near full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, charred wood, raisins in rum, vanilla fudge, coconut shavings, sherry and dark roast coffee. Complex, elegant and very tasty! Amazed that the rather intriguing barrel blend doesn’t get messy.
