Materfamilias is Latin for ‘female head of the house.’ No other beer we make commands as much attention and devotion as she. From the brewhouse to the barrels, your Mother’s remains at the service of this exquisite imperial stout. Roasted malt brings rich flavors of chocolate and dried fruit. In the aging process, the beer’s interaction with the wood of bourbon, rye whiskey, rum, and brandy barrels dictates the composition of the final blend. Materfamilias cannot be rushed. It cannot be forced. It brooks no compromise. The result is a stout of such complexity and nuance that you, too, will recognize the authority of your Materfamilias.

~10 oz draft at the Martin City Brewing Company Pub in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is black with a touch of brown and a khaki small head. Nice lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is roast, soy along with some sweet brown sugar and dark chocolate. The taste is the roast, soy and sugar cane of the nose. Decent balance of flavors. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, mouth coating and a soy sweet finish. Solid made beer for a style that I am just not that into at the moment.

Bottle with thanks to phaleslu! Pours opaque black with a medium dark brown head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, vanilla, dates, bourbon, alcohol. Flavor is medium sweet, chocolate, light bitter. A lot of things going on in this one - barrel notes aplenty, almost too many creating some conflict. Full body, silky mouthfeel. This is quite the solid beer, if a little muddled in terms of defining what it wants to be.
