Mikkeller has opened several world-class craft beer bars all over the world, most recently in Asia. We wanted to apply this globetrotting take to our collaboration brew. We found inspiration in a classic Thai iced tea: the spiced tea and condensed milk classic ubiquitous in Thai restaurants. The result is a spiced amber ale, brewed with black tea, sweet orange peel, tamarind, and star anise with lactose added for a full and creamy mouthfeel.

One of those beers you know is gonna crash and burn, but it’s in the Beer Camp Collaboration mixer, so you gotta just plow on ahead. Overly sweet, not quite on the level of one of those insipid malt beverage-tea creations, but beyond what any acceptable ale should be. Notes of brown sugar, caramel, sweet tea, chai, ginger, licorice, orange, and a weak floral bitterness. Grows increasingly sweet and cough syrup-ish. Creamy texture feels slack, and the nose is rather subdued for all the adjuncts. Creative? Sure. Drinkable? Not in the slightest.

Different just to be able to say hey, I’m different. Orange with a white head. Tea leaves, licorice, oranges, and some spice heat. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass from Epsom Circle Market. Appearance is clear gold with tons of sparkle, finger width white creamy foam head with good retention and decent lacing. Aroma is malt, lactose, mild citrus. Taste is cracker malt, light orange, mild tamarind spiciness. Palate is medium bodied with thick, smooth texture, soft carbonation and pleasantly sweet finish. Overall, an outstanding appearance but aroma and taste are fairly run of the mill.

12 oz bottle from the mix pack, bought at work. Aroma is floral, peppery, anise, orange peel, tea, other spices I can’t name, cookie dough. Pours clear new penny copper with a small off-white head that laces a little bit. Taste is sweet and a bit savory with all advertised spices. Interesting concoction.

12 oz bottle from the Beer Camp 2017 pack. The beer is a medium amber, lightly hazy. Medium sized off white head, leaving some lacing. The beer has a lot of lactose flavor and its mostly on top of medium-light caramel, which is an odd combination. Definite anise, mild citrus, light tea. I like Thai-style iced tea, but these flavors just dont work for me on top of a beer base. Its just sweet and medicinal. The anise and lactose are just too much. The taste is fairly sweet. Even more anise and a bit more tea. Mild tea bitterness, another odd bit. The flavors are fairly mild but still off-putting and if they were stronger, Im not sure how much of this beer I could get through. Fairly light body, somewhat slick. I like creativity, but this is just not good. Easily the worst beer of the pack so far.

Bottle from a Lazy Dog Slightly hazy dark golden color with a small fleeting white head. Anise mostly in the aroma with bits of spice and sweet bready malt. I actually liked this a little more than I thought I would, Interesting experiment but not something I could drink much of.
