Insanity, 11.1% ABV, is made by aging our Blithering Idiot Barleywine Ale in whiskey barrels. The barrel aging imparts an additional level of complexity to an already intense malt profile by adding a combination of vanilla, oak and whiskey notes.

Dark ruby pour with foamy white lacing in surprising abundance for something with this much alcohol in it - aroma is heavy with alcohol, caramel malt, bourbon and wood - unlike with the Heresy, the bourbon doesn’t nail you over the head in this one - fairly tasty and sweet (borders on cloying, though) - however, just like its cousin, the elements the cask imparts to the ale don’t balance out very well with the fruity esters and thick malt body - perhaps something as simple as aging the beer a while will balance out the abundant, yet conflicting flavors, but for now this is far too brash and palate-confusing.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jan 14th, 2005: Clear, dark amber color with a very thin light tan head. Lacing is nonexistent. Woody aroma, with a strong bourbon/whiskey presence. Rich body, and the alcohol is not hidden in this one at all. Oak and toffee flavors are masked by the bourbon flavor at first, and the sting doesn’t go away for awhile. The finish is dry and bitter. Pretty good beer but kind of hard to drink.

Dark reddish-brown; good foxy yellow, creamy head, slightly irregular. New oakwood, much vanilla with grapey aroma and white chocolate. Very almondy flavour, peaches, bitter almonds and marzipan, more vanilla. Sharp bitterish taste, not quite in balance with the sweet chocolate underneath. Wood, but stripped viciously. Sharp MF, full bodied, outspoken slickness. Indeed, imagine marzipan made with bitter almonds... New Bourbon casks, OK, but this has eaten through them. And I never drink Bourbon anyway - some Lagavullin, please...

Secret Santa beer #9, sent by Jason (Dorwart). Fiery orange-red body, medium cream head that left nice sheets of lacing. Wacky aroma, mostly a combination of intense bourbon notes (oak, vanilla) and Weyerbacher’s strange yeast strain that adds notes of circus peanuts (artificial banana) and candy corn. Huge bourbon flavor (this is really hot!), candy corn, caramel and brown sugar with a nice oaky spritzy finish. The body’s substantial enough to carry the bourbon, but this could definitely be aged a bit. If you want to clean the senses, though, ...
