Insanity, 11.1% ABV, is made by aging our Blithering Idiot Barleywine Ale in whiskey barrels. The barrel aging imparts an additional level of complexity to an already intense malt profile by adding a combination of vanilla, oak and whiskey notes.

Bottled. Brownish red, a bit hazy, colour, beige small head. Plummy and sugary aroma with hints of vanilla. Quite the same in flavour, except that alcohol shows up more in the flavour than nose. Very wellbalanced.

Cherry-red, a bit muddy color. Small white head (just some foam). Tobacco, vanilla and oak in the nose. Sweet, liquerish palate with strong taste of vanilla. In the finish a bit hoppy and alcoholic.

I think thanks go out to boto for sending this months ago! This starts out with an average sized head of light brown over a dark orange body. The aroma is light malt with some raisin and a fair amount of vanilla. If the oak adds the vanilla to this it is a very nice touch indeed. Sweet but not cloying, and with a very smooth delivery. Very nice.

22-oz bottle. Very pretty dark amber with a beige head. Sweet alcohol and fruitiness in the nose. Strange dark fruits in the flavor- quite pleasant... some maltiness, and definite alcohol. Finishes with a cough-syruplike flavor. I do enjoy this one, but wouldn’t seek it out on a regular basis.

There were some very complex flavors in this drink. Poured dark cherry colored and the head was a light tan color and lasted a very long time. And the lines from others about the alcohol warmth is completely true.

Bottle: Poured a light burgundy color ale with a small dark head with pretty good retention. Aroma of sweet liquor filtered subtly through the malt and sweet hops of this beer. Taste is quite sweet but at least the bourbon aging and come well together at the end do not overpower it. Probably one of the best bourbon aging beers I had. Thanks to Beerslayer for that one.

Hazy amber/copper coloured body with a thinnish off-white head. ARoma of oak, vanilla, bourbon, malt, toffee, raisins and alcohol. Full-bodied; Strong oak & vanilla flavours with a subtle alcohol taste. Malt and pit fruits very prevalent after the initial tastes. Aftertaste shows must and a few mellow undertones of alcohol and oak. Overall, a nice beer-I sampled this side-by-side with the normal Blithering Idiot, and I prefer the non-oaked version! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 09-January-2005.

Hazy reddish-amber. Crazy boozy vanilla maple colour. Sweet, like a maple liqueur (but not as gross as those tend to be), with a soft maltiness. Nice firm alcoholic finish. Lots of subtlety and depth, a real winner.

Bottle Pours a medium redish deep caramel color with a very dense thick light tan head. Very heavy thick lasting lacing as well. Aroma was awsome. Sweet brown sugar and caramel with a definate alcohol slant as well. Flavors were I think over shadowed a bit by the seemingly very strong alcohol flavor. Would have guessed over the 11% stated. The oak barells are there and the sweet malty flavor is really all that I noticed. Fairly one dimensional I thought. Tasty though. Soft smooth feel. Would like to try the Blithering Idiot now. Thanks again to Buck Dich for sharing.

Bottled. Hazy red, near no head. Woody apple brandy nose - calvados! malty and sweet with clean mouthfeel and a completely overpowering bourbon/calvados wood flavour. Sugary finish. One-dimensional undiluted barrel flavour. A disappointment.
