The balanced, dark lager gets its name from the ideal infusion of three ingredients: locally roasted coffee from the Pepper Peddler, Madagascan vanilla beans and cacao nibs. Sudwerk brewed a chocolate malt lager, the Dunkel, as its base beer. This brew is the second release in a series of Experimental West Coast Lagers, and is part of Sudwerk’s quest to redefine the American lager.

Bottle, from Bottlecraft Little Italy, split on the hotel patio 13/11/14. Mahogany brown with a moderate beige covering that clears to a swirl and edgeing. Nose is coffee, dark malt, toffee, light spice, vanilla essence. Taste comprises coffee grinds, vanilla, spoce, light roast, chocolate. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok stuff, does what it says on the tin.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours ruddy cola with a slight beige head. Aroma is very vanilla. And chocolate. Med minus body. Flavor is vanilla (very), a little watery coffee and very little chocolate. Meh.

Tap at The University of Beer in Davis, CA. Pours very dark and ruddy. Aroma of coffee, vanilla and citrus? Med body. Flavor is coffee, vanilla and something tartish. A very, very unusual lager. After a bit the combo suggests grass. Very different and interesting.
