This burly West Coast IPA is the result of long hours in the hop shop. The Apprentice is back overhauled and rebuilt with a nod to the past and an eye on the road ahead. Chrome hubs and candy paint might turn heads, but this beast is built for speed, barreling through the finish line with potent hop power.

Draft at City Beer, San Fran. Clear gold with lasting head. Nose is light herbal and mild pine. The flavor is mostly pine throughout the sip. Noyes of citrus and earthy green leaf hops. The only negative is the thin watery body and moithfeel. Serviable and clean.

Are we getting a little away from ourselves here? An 8.4% IPA, not an IIPA? Ok, well rating this as an IPA, the aroma was traditional San Diego hop bomb, citrus and spruce with some grapefruit. The mouthfeel is acerbic and a detergent like. Nice finish however.

On tap at Societe, pours a clear pale yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of floral hops, some citrus notes, and slightly sweet malt. Flavour brings out citrus and floral hops and dry biscuity malts. Quite dry and thirst-quenching, with amazing depth. Stunningly well-made IPA.

Sample at the tasting room. Clear copper color with a medium thin foamy white head that dissipates gradually. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, roast malt and fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of grassy hops, pineapple and toasted malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a zesty citrus and hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Draft -Mild citrus, a bit of grass and some tropical fruit. Clear yellow with a thin head. Grapefruit and atone of grass, almost pine but not quite. Bitterness is a big but quick dissipating hit. Relatively clean finish for a huge beer. Very refreshing IPA.

On tap @ Encinitas Ale House (alcohol advertised as 7.5%). Pale blonde color, hazy. Dense white head. Aroma’s: citrus, bitter, herbal, slightly acidic with a hint of malty sweetness. Flavor is bitter, to the point of being harsh, but very refreshing. Medium bodied. Finishes with a long lasting bitterness. True Westcoast IPA!

On tap at the source. Pours with a hazed golden yellow hue with a lasting white head and good lace. Aromas are hop forward: citrusy, floral, tangerine and resin. Medium grapefruit pith. Lightly malty, bready, no crystal character (which I am completely okay with). Dry, malty. Quite clean yeast wise. Flavors are very dry, bitter, light resin, citrus, a bit of spicy cohumulone hop character, grassy. Medium to medium strong bitterness with a bitter balance. Well attenuated and dry with medium to medium high carbonation. Didn’t notice much alcohol. Well done, but the next IPA is even better!
