Golden in color with a slightly sweet body. Its ester-laden character reveals an enigmatic dance between Belgian ale yeast and candy sugar complimented by a pleasing dry finish. Black Tulip is a versatile beer for food. Enjoyable pairings include mild bleu cheeses, berries and other light desserts.

Mysterious, alluring and seductive, yet tantalizingly elusive; these are the storied characteristics of the Black Tulip.

12 ounce bottle into chalice, 2012 vintage. Pours moderately cloudy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of apricot, pear, apple, peach, clove, pepper, honey, bread, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of big apricot, pear, apple, peach, light banana, clove, pepper, honey, toast, biscuit, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, honey, biscuit, candi sugar, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, robustness, and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a nice yeast/malt sweetness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick and creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice tripel style. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

On draft at Soacebar Falls Church VA. Pours a clear dark gold with an off white head. Orange and corriander nose and flavor. Sweet for the style but very tasty.

Pear, clay, and peaches on the nose. Clear amber, plenty of floaties, medium slow building head. Fruity and peachy, but with an equally distinct mushroomy barley malt presence.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange gold with small frothy white head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong clove and yeast. Thin mouthfeel with a clove and banana flavor with a light spice in the finish. Alcohol present but not overpowering. A good tripel from New Holland.

12oz pour into tulip. Extremely light orange/amber with slight head. Pretty straight-forward trippel. Nice body on initial sip, but a little flat on finish.

22oz bomber poured into my Chimay Trappist glass. Pours a hazy golden orange with a small ring of white head. Aroma of banana, citrus pulp and clove. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Banana, some pine hops and citrus. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Flat carbonation and a somewhat long finish. Overall, it’s ok. I think I was just expecting more from this beer.

Draft at Dexters. Hazy, light orange-yellow with a steady frothy head. Yeasty, almost clovy aroma. Sweet and sugary, some nice classic Tripel tastes, but a little one dimensional. Mellow, even with the big ABV. Doughy, creamy. There is some mild wheat flavor. OK.
