Mysterious, alluring and seductive, yet tantalizingly elusive; these are the storied characteristics of the Black Tulip.

On tap as part of a sampler at the New Holland Brewery in Holland, MI. Appearance a cloudy golden with a thin white head that partially laces to the glass. Aroma a bit of cloves and banana, definitely by-products of the Belgian yeast. The menu states that rock candy is an aroma and I kinda get that, its definitely sweet, not really getting the beet sugar though but then again I’m no Dwight Schrute. Taste very unique, dominated by the wild Belgian yeast with off flavors I’m not particularly used to, and that could be the beet sugar. It has a pretty nice finish and is surprisingly smooth. At first I wasn’t sure if I should order as its typically not a style I’m a fan of, but its pretty good. I’ll give it a B+.

Hazy amber beer, low carbonation. Palate is soft and silky and a just a touch syrupy. Sweet and slightly perfumey fruit. A little spice. Not terribly complex but very sweet and drinkable.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Deep gold, huge fine head. Very malty aroma with cracker and biscuits. Flavor is rather sweet with a little honey, not much hop presence, the yeast a little funky. Another kind of off American tripel, not all that good.

22 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear light amber color with a moderately large head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma is pale bready malts, strong caramel, pear, peach, banana. Taste is caramel, toasted bread, bitter grassy notes and faint pear and other fruit notes. Sweet and sugary at first with a dry finish. Medium bodied. Decent tripel.

Aroma: Light sweet fruits, some light spice, a bit of yeast, and just a little bubblegum
Appearance: Clear golden color, small white head, served in a tulip glass
Flavor: Similar to the nose, sweet and light spice mostly present in the finish, hides the alcohol pretty well
Palate: Smooth and crisp beer, with a nice mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty good. It was light and smooth, but still had a decent amount of character. Pretty sweet and decently complex.

bottle - Pours lightly hazy yellow with a moderate sized white head. The aroma is of malt and yeast with banana notes. The flavor is of sweet malt with some citrus notes and some mild hops in a lightly dry finish. It’s tasty and works well for a tripel without being a standout example of the style.

Golden color, not much head. Floral and bubblegum nose, maybe sweeter hints of caramel and honey. Nicely sweet fluffy malts, but clean for a tripel. Somewhat unusual.
