Modern Sorghum Extra Pale Ale
Mmm Soul! is a homage to umqombothi, the traditional sorghum beer brewed in South Africa for centuries. Honoring this rich brewing heritage, we’ve crafted a modern interpretation that blends cultural roots with contemporary technique and bold hop character.
Sorghum has fascinating brewing properties. At 70% local sorghum malt and 30% of our own Soul Barrel wind barley, this beer is among the highest percent sorghum of ever used. We used a complex, multi-step mashing to coax out the soft, grainy sweetness and juicy mouthfeel from sorghum.
On this layer of amazing sorghum flavors, we added a heap of Southern Star and Southern Passion hops, grown right here in SA, and fermented it dry for a refreshing finish. Mmm Soul! is light-bodied, juicy, and crushable extra pale ale. It finishes crisp and fresh, with subtle grain complexity supporting the hop flavor bursts of red berry, dark tropical fruit and citrus. This soulful, sessionable pale ale is part of our mission to showcase local ingredients, born from tradition and brewed for the present.

On tap at Soul Barrel. Pours clear blonde with a white head. Lots of sorghum and some citrus on the nose. Flavour has a clean, subdued, but clear sorghum character along with some piney hops. This is fantastic.
