Live Culture is a farmhouse-style, mixed-culture ale that expresses a true sense of time and place. It reflects seasonal brewing conditions and showcases local ingredients—our terroir. We use malt that’s floor-malted in our cellar, and the ale is fermented directly in oak barrels with a wild yeast culture that lives within our brewery. This native yeast evolves with the seasons, imparting distinct character to each batch. It’s a brewing philosophy rooted in the Old World—largely forgotten today—where beer reflects the natural rhythms of the environment, and the brewer guides rather than controls the process.

After primary fermentation in oak, the beer aged for two years with whole-bunch Franschhoek Pinotage grapes, lending vibrant notes of fresh fruit and berries. Over the long aging period, our wild yeast continued its slow work, layering the beer with the dry, funky, peppery, and delicate fruit notes that define Live Culture.

This beer is deeply imprinted with our environment. From the grain grown on-site and the native yeast fermentation, to aging with local fynbos and grapes, every element contributes to a truly unique sense of place.

Live Culture is one of the most awarded beers at the African Beer Cup, being awarded medals in each of the five years its been entered and winning Best Beer in Africa. This latest batch achieved the highest score in its category this year.
