Bottle from House Of Trembling Madness. Dark brown body with a tan head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of cocoa, spearmint and lime peel. Flavour of chocolate limes and dark roasted malt. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. I love a dark beer from The Kernel and this is a particularly good one. It wasn’t until I read the previous reviews that I realised this is available in Waitrose. Mixed feelings on that - good that Waitrose are showcasing one of the UK’s/world’s best breweries to a wider market, strange to see one of their bottles with a barcode on it. All the same, this is a lovely beer.

Bottle at home, picked up from Mother Arch iii, 01/11/2025.
Pitch black topped with a good sized dirty tan head that dissipates over time but holds true.
Nose is roast malts, liquorice, earthy fruit rinds, cocoa powder, toffee.
Taste comprises chocolate, spice, charr, ashen nip, dusty hops, toffee, dried fruit rinds.
Medium bodied, fine massaging carbonation, light drying close.
Top drawer well balanced and flavoursome porter.
As a Kernel fan I felt it important to put the money into their own till and line the pockets of a huge retailer.

Perfect pour - couldn’t look any better. Rich dark malts, ashy roast, orange peel, citrus oils, burnt pine, baking cocoa. Velvety texture, ideal condition. Balanced finish, more drying ashy roast, cocoa, earth, citrus rind. Super. Kernel in the supermarket, what a weird and wonderful thing.

Bottle at home picked up from Waitrose. A jet black brown coloured pour with a decent khaki head. Aroma is lovely nice resinous hop, tar, pine, bark, some mellow ashy roast, liquorice. Flavour is composed of nice rich roast, bitter liquorice, resinous hop, bark, rich bitter roast, singed pine, sap. Palate is medium bodied, hop resin, oily, moderate carbonation. Huge flavour. Cracking beer.

Bottle. Waitrose. Clear super dark chocolate brown. Kernel swede all present and correct. A looker. Nose has dark chocolate orange truffle. Orange oil. Hint of dark roast coffee. Well done bread crust. Taste has a whisper of fruity sweetness with a big, verging on tart bitterness. Loads of body staying right side of mega easy drinking. Dries out as it goes with the orange oil bitterness lingering at the end. Instant contender for best supermarket beer out there.
