Spiced Double Ale with fig paste, orange peels, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves

Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.

2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Part of a "beers of Christmas" box set I was gifted (otherwise, I don't think I'd be drinking this). Pours a dark, reddish-brown, with rather small head. Aroma is cardamom, clove, ginger, other spice. Flavors follow. Mouthfeel is fairly clean and crisp, given the adjuncts. Really not my thing, but your mileage may vary...

Can from Busch's. Pours a caramel brown with a full two fingers of off-white foam that lingers. Aromas of cardamom, fig, orange zest and ginger. The palate shows a lot of ginger and cardamom. Big spiced floral notes on the finish that linger with some zing from the orange zest. Enjoyable spiced ale.

Bottle. Poured a deep amber-copper color with a small head. Aroma had tons of holiday spice. Taste was sweet up font, alot of holiday spice in the middle and a slight hoppy-bitter after-taste.

That's a fine Christmas. It got a good mix of spices but it's best served cold.

Aromatic spices fin the beginning. Malty dry body, fruity with a deep grainy back. Caramel, Christmas spices, dry grain in the finish. Very nice stuff.

On tap at Southern Tier - Cleveland, pours a clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out cardamom and clove upfront, followed by orange peel and cinnamon. Flavour expresses the ginger, cardamom and clove upfront, with some candied orange peel and bready malt in back. Surprisingly cohesive and harmonious use of spices, without too much sweetness. Now this is a nicely done Xmas ale.
