Our head brewer, Mike, loves this style, but what do you call it? A hoppy stout, a black IPA, a Cascadian dark ale? We knew whatever we named it, someone would say we're wrong, so we just rolled with it.

Unpopular Opinion is a roasty, bold, and unapologetically hop-forward stout. We used Chinook and Centennial from our friends at @ryefield_hops plus some Chinook from our recent US haul, bringing layers of pine, grapefruit, resin, and white pepper.

For this beer, we also used a new yeast strain from @mogwaiculture, derived from the old CL-50 strain, which has proven to be extremely versatile so you'll be seeing this workhorse in more of our beers going forward.

From a 440ml can on 22/10/2025. Pours a deep brown with smallish tan head. The nose features some dark chocolate, roasted malt and licorice. I can see where the brewer's blurb about the style comes in - kind of a cross between a stout and black IPA seems right. Taste wise, it's more dark chocolate and roasted malt, with some tobacco and coffee in the mix. Firmly bitter at the back - roasty with a good dash of pine. Has a full bodied, chewy palate and moderate carbonation. Excellent.

Can. Just about black, ~cm of beige head that laces OK. Aroma of roast, liquorice, bread, pine, vague citrus, perhaps some nectarines. Nice chocolate brioche texture with firm bitterness. Rich but dryish. Neither aromatics nor bitterness are overdone. Very good.
