Bottle. Brown body that lets some light through. Head is largish and foamy. Aromas are of bran, hazelnut, a little bit of toffee and some allspice/nutmeg. Flavor is decidedly dark, but mouthfeel is a little watery. The bran like flavor comes through strongly. Not very exciting once you get past the sniffing stage.

If pious means sacred or majestic, then this ain’t pious. However, a dark lager with a sweet aroma. Pretty brown but not dark brown in my steelers mug. OK flavor with a little syrup feel to it. Has a bitter finish but is not lasting.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a murky dark amber color with a medium thin light beige head and spotty lacing. Bready malt aroma, along with a hint of nuts. Medium-bodied and smooth with malt and caramel flavors, plus a bit of chocolate. It kind of falls off though, and the lightly bitter hops aftertaste is short-lived as well. This showed promise at first but ended up being pretty run-of-the-mill.

Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a medium brown color with a small white head. Very faint malt aroma. The flavor was bitter, nutty and dry with some roasted malt present as well. Actually this tasted a lot more like a brown ale to me than a dunkel. Nothing inspiring here.
