Bubbly beige head stayed well on a reddish brown still body. Vinous, oaky, church & malt aroma. Medium bodied, smooth on the palate with a clean spritely aft. Overripe berries, underripe stone fruit, peach, oak & vinous tastes with a raspberry finish. Quite similar to a Flemish Bruin.

Flesje gedeeld met Tomhendriksen. Amberkleurig tot robijnrood bier. Aroma van donker fruit en gerookte mout. Smaak van hout en hop. Nasmaak is licht bitter.

Fles gedeeld door Inoven, geprobeerd met BartvG en JoepvW. Het is een donker roodbruin bier. Het heeft een moutig aroma. De smaak is moutig en zoetig met wat hout tonen.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with ruby glimmer and huge, firm, foamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish malty aroma, notes of toffee, caramel, vanilla, oaky overtones, fruity hints of cherry. Taste is sweet malty and dry oaky, notes of toffee, caramel, vanilla, fruity hints of sweet cherries, some biting and warming alcohol; slightly overcarbonated.

Bottle at Volkscafe St Jakob Brugge. Very dark ruby almost black lasting tan head. Very smooth in the mouth. Yes vanilla from the whisky some heat on the finish. Very smoith in the mouth like velvet chocolate then an alcohol kick. Pretty good. It went down far too quickly for a beer this strength. Really liked it.

Rerate. Hazy dark brown, red hue, frothy, beige head. Aroma of raisin, blue grape, plum, caramel, liquorice, brandy. Taste has sweet raisin, pear & plum over toffee maltiness, bit sourish, metallic too. Herbal hoppy finish along wood, phenolic accents & dried fruits, warming brandy alcohol. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Could have been more pronounced in its wood and whisky qualities, plain good nevertheless. (Edited 24/10/2021.)

2017 Whiskey Oaked 750 ml bottle Huge beige to tan head leaving lace over clear cola-coloured beer, lightly carbonated. Creamy nose wood, chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, tad milky. Sweet but with woody-drier following. Chocolate, dark malts, brown candi sugar, sugar syrup. Seems well-bodied at first, but with a typical Roman watery finish. Creamy MF throughout, also thanks to the head. Upgraded Roman dark.

Bottle. Brown copper color. Aroma has sweet yeast ester, iron, malt and ripe fruit. Taste is sweet, with iron, caramelised malt, yeast ester and cardboard. Sweet finish with a faint vanilla touch that could be whiskey. No oak to be found, but enough oxidation and co2. Bad.

The follow-up to Adriaen Brouwer Wintergold, so basically a revival of the old Roman Dobbelen Bruinen older Belgian beer afficionados may remember, but aged on whisky barrels. From tap. Thick, dense and frothy, yellowish white head, clear deep chocolate brown-hued bronze colour, very dark but translucent with ruby tinge. Aroma of caramel, dry earth, walnut, iron, dried banana, candied fig, burnt brown sugar, brown bread, dried autumn leaves, some alcohol and woodiness but no serious whisky aroma worth mentioning. Sweet flavor, hints of raisin, banana and pear with a soft blackberry-like sourishness underneath, but dominated by residual brown sugary sweetness; medium carbo, very supple, filling, lean body, bit metallic, with a light toasty accent in the end along with ’white’ warming, but non-astringent alcohol and only the slightest touch of drying oak, as well as an earthy hop bitter accent. Neither the hops nor the wood are capable of adequately balancing the malt and brown sugary sweetness, which remains lingering after swallowing. Same issues here as in its predecessor: a missed opportunity at greatness, too metallic and too sweet, lacking a bit in body and not nearly whisky barrel enough; almost like any ’generic’, old Belgian family brewer’s quadrupel - but still a technically decent, traditional, very much okay beer.
