Some might think we’re out of our gourd for making a pumpkin ale, but our Pumpkin Down is not like the others. The caramel and toffee maltiness of our Piper Down Scottish ale is the perfect backdrop for a boatload of roasted pumpkin. Just before bottling, we add a subtle amount of spice to complement, but not overwhelm, the earthy flavor. It was a smash at the brewery, and we think you’ll agree.

Thanks to TimE for sharing the bottle! Poured into a teku showing dark tanned amber with moderate to high filtration and very sparse white foam around the edges. The nose shows a moderate intensity of sweet pumpkin pie and pumpkin pie spice notes. The palate is lightly carbonated and full bodied. The bitterness is first the most apparent with the pumpkin flavors coming through on the mid palate. Bone dry with only the spices and pumpkin flavors coming through in a strong forward background. Interesting but just not type.

Keg at BD Sheps, 02/11/15. Rich amber with a big ole light beige covering. Nose is spice, clove, pumpkin pie, herbal tones, carrot cake. Taste comprises mellow pumpkin, carroway seed, sweet’n’sour tones, spice, herbal tones, cahdyfloss. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent pumpkin offering, well balanced and joined up.

Big & dark. Smells like pumpkin spice. taste is mostly that also. Spicey and difficult with little actual pumkin IMHO. Almost too much spice, it gets in the way. A slight skunk pumpkin perfume. Not really enjoyable. Almost like drinken pumpkin perfume, whew.

Appearance- very dark amber/ruby , with a one-finger light brown head which lasts. Aroma- creamy malt, brown bread, pumpkin pie, hint of cloves, stewed apple, malt loaf, sultanas. Taste- fruitcake, lots of cinnamon, malt, bready, sugar-glazed fruit, nutty undertones. Mouthfeel is on the fluffy and thick side. Satisfying and tasty finish. Good ale!

Sample at Aces and Ales South Nellis. Murky reddish-brown color with a thin beige head that recedes steadily to a dense film. Sticky patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and pumpkin spice. Light-bodied with flavors of earthy malt, cinnamon and caramel. The finish is sweet with a malt and pumpkin spice aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a darkish brown color with red-orange highlights and a medium sized foamy off white head that left good lacing. The aroma was nutty, wood, and had a bit of vague spices. The flavor was bitterish, woody, nutty and had faint vague spices. Medium length finish. Medium body. Disappointing.
