For this version of Stone Enjoy By IPA we thought: “We don’t always have a filter, so why should our beer?” By skipping a step and letting this devastatingly fresh, golden-hued double IPA go un filtered, the beer takes on a hazy appearance and its peach and tropical fruit hop aroma are intensified. So though it may sound like it, this missed step was no misstep.
Like the other IPAs in this series, this version is brewed specifically NOT to last.
Although it’s very similar to our regular version of Stone Enjoy By IPA (it is the same recipe after all), leaving the beer unfiltered results in a perceptible change with the hop aroma. It is more fruit-forward than our filtered version, which has more of a balance between dank and fruit. It’s a little challenging to brew, since we’re used to filtering our beers, but a fun one, with much of the same hop intensity as our original version.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run, 02.14.16 vintage. Hazy orange, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of pine, resin, floral hops, a bit of tropical fruit and citrus, pale malts. The taste is piney, resin, minty, herbal, green hops, pale malt, some tropical fruits. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness.

On tap at Super Deli Mart, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out pungent piney and resinous hops, some citrus zest and just enough biscuity malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with near-brutal resinous and piney hopping, followed by citrus zest, and bone dry biscuity malt to back. Pretty abrasive stuff, even more than the regular Enjoy By. Works well, but the drinkability is rather low. Still, excellent.

Keg at Aptos Street BBQ, Santa Cruz, 02/02/16. Lightly hazed golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pine, light dank notes, orange pith, straw, mineral notes. Taste comprises melon, orange pith, light grapefruit, bread dough, toasted malt, bitter citrics. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with moderate hop bitterness. Decent enough DIPA, not top of class but approachable and drinks well below the ABV.

Draft at Aptos St. BBQ. Pours mostly clear gold with a frothy white head. The nose holds moderate citrusy hops, a little pine, pale bread. Medium sweet flavorbwith piney and grassy bitterness, some bready pale malts, ripening orange and tangerine. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming and lightly resinous on the finish, with more ripe citrus fruits, sweet bread, alcohol, pine. Just OK. Was expecting more.

Draught. Almost clear deep orange liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of citrus, tangerine, light caramel, mango, lychee and light grain. Taste is very light sweet and medium bitter with notes of citrus, tangerine, light grain and light caramel. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice. Bit maltier than the regular one.

22oz bottle pours a hazy gold with some cloudy, sudsy head. Nose has tropical fruit, guava, musk melon, light herbs, candy, mild soap, heavy flower pollen. Flavor has more flower pollen, guava, peach, soap, tangerine, a little green vanilla. Dry and zippy finish. Nice.

Draft at Beer Culture. Murky orange with an average sized head and decent lacing. Tropical / pineapple hops and resin hops come through on the aroma. Good bitterness. Mild heat. Medium-plus bodied. Pretty drinkable considering the ABV.

Bottle from a lazy dog. Murky golden orange color with a minimal bubbly white head. Huge fruity tropical stone aromas with bits of pine and earth and a touch of alcohol and light sweet bread. The flavor is sweet bready malt beneath an onslaught of tropical and stone fruit with hints of orange tied together with resinous pine and a touch of ethanol. Less onion than other versions of enjoy by, I’m a fan.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/8/2016. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Large amount of pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon/orange rind, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from sticky bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
