For this version of Stone Enjoy By IPA we thought: “We don’t always have a filter, so why should our beer?” By skipping a step and letting this devastatingly fresh, golden-hued double IPA go un filtered, the beer takes on a hazy appearance and its peach and tropical fruit hop aroma are intensified. So though it may sound like it, this missed step was no misstep.
Like the other IPAs in this series, this version is brewed specifically NOT to last.
Although it’s very similar to our regular version of Stone Enjoy By IPA (it is the same recipe after all), leaving the beer unfiltered results in a perceptible change with the hop aroma. It is more fruit-forward than our filtered version, which has more of a balance between dank and fruit. It’s a little challenging to brew, since we’re used to filtering our beers, but a fun one, with much of the same hop intensity as our original version.

On tap at New Bohemia. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet citrus with a slight bitter bite and a sweet grain backbone. Flavor is much more bitter with grapefruit and citrus with a bit of sweet grain underlying.

Draft 2-14-16 at Lost Dog Cafe Alexandria. Poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was strong resin notes, with some grassy character. Light citrus, mostly pine notes. Like the regular, it’s not a malt bomb, but it is a touch boozy, but not as boozy as expected. This was pretty good.

Nice stuff. Citrus and lots of pine. Pours orange with good head and lacing. Citrus sour and bitter finish. Tap at churchkey.

Heavily hazy, amber colored body has auburn tints and a frothy white head atop that shows strong retention.
Grapefruit, watermelon, strong pine and light alcohol grace the nose, with a touch of toasted malt in the background. Not too crazy about that, and I don’t know why this can’t just be an all pale malt beer. It’s certainly juicy and with some enjoyable tropical fruits, light dankness and even some pleasant fruity strawberry-like character. But it’s aggressive and the more it warms, pine, grapefruit and toasted malt really hit hard.
The flavor is initially quite fruity, juicy and full of soft, sugary, honey-like notes. But emerging through the middle is a near-abrasive bitterness which comes hand-in-hand with strong caramel/toasted malt character, distracting/detracting from the hops. Heavy pine resin sits on the finish, as well as some alcohol. Texture is true to the name and shows a soft, malty, tightly carbonated character. They had something nice, but had to "Stone-it" and just put too much in. There’s no need for all of this malt, it certainly doesn’t need to be 9.4% abv and there’s just too much resin.

Pours a cloudy, golden yellow with good-sized, fluffy head. Aroma full of citrus and pine. Flavor also has a ton of citrus, tropical fruit, pine bite, and a strong, bitter finish. Another winner here for Stone.

22 oz bottle (Enjoy By 02.14.16 Unfiltered IPA) poured into a Bruery tulip. Mostly clear golden orange with around two fingers of off-white head. Very tiny bits of floating sediment. Aromas of floral notes, garlic and onion, grapefruit citrus, hop oils. Tastes of grapefruit citrus, tropical fruit, floral notes, pine, garlic and onion, some hop oils, hints of yeast. Medium body with a semi-dry finish. Nice juicy mouthfeel.

Draught at Kettner. Hazy orange with a white head. Very heavy in the tropical candied fruits. That’s nearly the only thing going on here. A bit of sweet malt but it comes right back to the tropical notes. I generally enjoy tropical fruit IPAs but this might be a bit much. Still not overly impressed with the Enjoy By series.

On tap at the Beer Baron. It pours a lightly hazed golden yellow color with a white head. The aroma has massive mango, peach and pineapple with maybe some hints of flowers and spice, but definitely tropical fruit forward. Potent. The flavor has a nice crackery/bready malt base with stronger notes of hop spice and flowers along with white grape, peach and pineapple. Strong spicy bitter finish. Somehow this seems less maltier, but creamier in the mouth than the regular Enjoy By. More aroma too, but maybe that’s due to the freshness and the draft serving. Either way, I loved this.
