A decidedly American imperial stout with espresso
The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. For each 120-barrel batch, we incorporated over 250 lbs. of artisanal espresso-roast beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence. When it came time to selecting our coffee, we chose the same local roasters who contributed to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic beans helped us achieve this dark, hoppy and wonderfully aromatic espresso stout.
In 2013, as part of our “Odd Beers for Odd Years” program, we brewed our 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. We loved this beer so much that we wanted another way to brew something similar to it. This beer is first in a series of higher ABV seasonals that we will be brewing in 2016. We used Stone ESPRESSO IRS as an inspiration but took it in a slightly different direction. Ultimately, I was inspired by craft brewed stouts of the late 1980s and early ‘90s. To me, that meant using 100 percent American hops and American specialty malts. This a stout similar to one I would have brewed when I was first starting out as a brewer, so it was fun to take sort of a “throwback” approach. Espresso of course adds a wonderful complement to the coffee and cocoa flavors that are coming from the malts.

Dense, oily opaque black body with a minimal tan head. Light aroma of roast malts and dark roast coffee. The flavor is lightly bitter from the roast malts. OK but doesn’t touch my local winter fav W&B.

Bottle. Dark brown color with a thin beige head, wispy lacing. Nose is rich espresso, roast, and lightly vegetal. Rich espresso flavors, heavy roast, some cocoa. Moderately bittersweet. Really nice coffee beer.

On tap at TCBW 2016. Very dark brown, close to black, with a dense and lasting beige head. Almost intense aroma of strong dark coffee, some dar chocolate, roasted malt, hints of dark fruits and hops. Medium sweet with lovely coffee flavour and a nice and balanced bitterness. Delicious!!

Tap at TCBW2016. Opaque black color, good beige head. Aroma has strong espresso, dry toasted maltyness. Medium-bodied. Toasted malty, light chilli kind of spiceyness, coffee. Balanced and smooth.

12 ounce bottle into Bailey’s Taproom snifter - dark brown pour - decent off-white lace - fairly robust and thick, with heavy coffee presence throughout - I love coffee, but the character here is overly bitter and astringent, charred, overly smoky and roasty - once the palate adjusts, it gets a little more pleasant, but there is also a strong alcohol presence on the tail end - drinkable, but sloppy.

Pours dark black-brown from a bottle, weak coffee smell. This isn’t like an americano pulled by a skilled barista, this is a watery double shot from someone on their first day. Not worth the hype.

Bottle from Bert’s Big rich coffee on the nose with a touch of chocolate earth and fruit. Rich creamy mouth and full body help tame the bitter roast and chocolate in this brew. Great beer.
