A decidedly American imperial stout with espresso

The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. For each 120-barrel batch, we incorporated over 250 lbs. of artisanal espresso-roast beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence. When it came time to selecting our coffee, we chose the same local roasters who contributed to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic beans helped us achieve this dark, hoppy and wonderfully aromatic espresso stout.

In 2013, as part of our “Odd Beers for Odd Years” program, we brewed our 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. We loved this beer so much that we wanted another way to brew something similar to it. This beer is first in a series of higher ABV seasonals that we will be brewing in 2016. We used Stone ESPRESSO IRS as an inspiration but took it in a slightly different direction. Ultimately, I was inspired by craft brewed stouts of the late 1980s and early ‘90s. To me, that meant using 100 percent American hops and American specialty malts. This a stout similar to one I would have brewed when I was first starting out as a brewer, so it was fun to take sort of a “throwback” approach. Espresso of course adds a wonderful complement to the coffee and cocoa flavors that are coming from the malts.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with short tannish head. Aromas of acidic coffee grounds. Flavors follow same with additional ash, plastic, and roasted malts. Lots of carbonation. Over the top on coffee and therefore way off balance - great for black espresso fans...

Bottle from Craftissimo at home. Dark dark brown pour with nice even and persistent fine tan head. Aroma is really nice dark black coffee with a bit of dark dark chocolate. Taste is deliciously rich bitter coffee with a good alcohol warmth and bite. Lasting coffee ground bitterness. Light but rich smooth palate with good fine carbonation. Great coffee stout.

(Thanks, Shawn "MacBoost") Bottle. A- Bitter coffee. A- Black color, black color, brown head. T- Bitter, coffee, cocoa, P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, dry finish. O- Good, but wish there was more espresso and chocolate and a bit less bitterness but that’s stone for you. Tasty.

Bottle: Black, with a thick tan head. Coffee, chocolate, espresso scent. Flavour is dark chocolate, coffee malt, resin. Good, but feels a bit watery and tame....not quite as "Imperial" as expected.

12 ounce bottle. Opaque black color topped by a moderate rocky beige head. Roasted malt nose is full of dark roast coffee aroma. Flavor follows the nose with some residual sweet malt flavor. Coffee flavor dominates the palate. Resiny hops in finish make this a bold and intense stout.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a small foamy beige head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was brewed coffee, cola and a hint of vanilla. The flavor was bitter with fruity hops, coffee , wood and cola. Long finish. Medium body. Ok.

Pour is a near black with a huge tan head. Aroms is a rich and intense coffee I can smell the coffee as I was pouring the beer out of the bottle. Flavor is an equally nice coffee with a big fresh roast flavor. I wish I could make coffee at home that tastes half as good as the coffee in this beer. I guess if your looking for a negative with this beer would be a lack of hops but because the coffee is so intense this can be overlooked. Solid coffee beer here.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 2/1/2016. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, caramel, toffee, smoke, char, light molasses/dark fruit, pine, light citrus, and roast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate citrus/pine hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, caramel, toffee, smoke, char, light molasses/dark fruit, pine, light citrus, and roast/smokey earthiness. Good amount of roast/char and pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, caramel, toffee, smoke, char, light molasses/dark fruit, pine, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate citrus/pine hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American imperial stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate citrus/pine hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home during a winter storm not wanting to go outside, right next to a space heater. Appearance is a rich dark black with a thin off white rim. Aroma is a great profile of robust coffee, chocolate, smells rich and lovely. Taste is fantastic, nice mixture of sweet and dry, abundant coffee notes, very very good. Need to get a six pack of this!
