The origins of Oatmeal Stout go back hundreds of years when oats were added to Stouts to promote a healthier image than other beers available during that time period. The unique blend of the oats and malts in Alaskan Stout produce a balanced, smooth beer with hints of coffee and caramel.

From the April 2013 3R6P beer tasting. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a small brown head that faded and left minimal lacing. The aroma was sweet chocolate, faint coffee, vanilla and a touch of smoke and port wine. The flavor was dry, bitter, roasty and smoky with a bit of coffee. Medium length dry, roasty and smoky finish. Medium body. Eh.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a rich brown chunky look and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, milk, cherries, a touch of coffee, nuts and a bit of caramel. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasty flavour with a lot of chewy chocolate and light spice notes strong up front. Aftertaste fades into a bit of raisins, some grapes, a little lactic flavour and some cherries touch off a bit of vanilla. Overall, a nice stout with a good body and a subtle but pleasant complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce stubby bottle purchased from La Bodega in Anchorage, Alaska on 23-June-2011 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 24-August-2012.

Decent, with a modestly dry backbone holding together a mocha-tinged sweetness. The oatmeal eases out the texture, leaving the brew velvety despite its thin appearance. Finishes dry and quick. Not enough of the big-bad stout flavors for me in this bottle; it could be great with just a few tweaks. Still worth trying, though.

My first beer from Alaska, purchased at Total Wine on my trip to Vegas. Pours a real dark brown (almost black) with little red highlights. Nice big mocha cap with decent retention and full patchy lacing. Mild roasted malts with notes of molasses and coffee. Smooth and slightly oily mouthfeel. Roasted malt taste that is not too bitter, but sweetened by the oatmeal and has a quick finish. Not much lingers. Not a bad oatmeal stout, but I have had better, creamier, tastier ones.
