Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Location: Draft at Cork City, 12/15/12
Aroma: The nose is fairly malty, with caramel, molasses, toffee, and some earthy hops
Appearance: It was served in a tulip, with a dark reddish color to the pour, and a beige head
Flavor: The flavor is medium sweet and fairly malty, with a solid earthy and a little citrusy bitterness
Palate: This one has a medium-full body, an average carbonation, and a bit of boozy heat
Overall Impression: I thought this was some pretty good stuff. It has a bit of heat from the alcohol, but it doesn't overpower the beer. It isn't a perfect Barleywine or anything, but it is a more than solid offering.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a light tan head. Sweet malt aroma. Rich malt flavor with toffee, brown sugar and light earthiness. Medium-plus bodied. Toffee lingers with some darker malts. Richer malts with hops backing and some light fruitiness.

Sample at the Linda Vista location. This beer is a mostly clear dark amber color with a medium and creamy beige head that recedes slowly. Thin sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and touches of fruit. Rich, chewy body with a somewhat medicinal character. Syrupy sweet fruits along with malt and hops flavors. The finish is tart and fruity with a mild hops aftertaste. Would be well above average but the medicinal qualities knock it down a couple pegs.

Draught Good yellow-creamhead; maroon beer. US hops, milkchocolate, coffee cream, grapes and a fruity finish. Good bready, well-balanced sweet-bitter; finish is very dry-bitterish; flavours of exotic fruit. Well-balanced, quite slick, dry-out effect in the end. Good, if unbelievably discreet in the alcohol for a barley wine.

tap at the brewery - What an appropriate name for a barley wine... it pours dark amber with a thin, long lasting head. The aroma is of heavy malt and dark fruit. Those fruit notes carry on well through the malt rich flavor. Some good hops accents kick in to balance it out and there’s some fairly mild alcohol presence. This barley wine is excellent.

On tap @ Hamilton’s. Pours a gorgeous clear amber with long lasting tan head and sheet lacing. The aroma is a bit mild with highly roasted malts and faint fruity esters. It smells mildly barleywine like. The taste is roasty and hoppy, wow. Highly roasted malts, some crystal malts (90L maybe), Special B, a hint of chocolate and an abundance of pine hops. The hops aren’t too bitter though. They are either including some late addition hops or the malt bill is so strong it pushes over the hop bitterness. This is really a big load of malts and lacks some of the dark fruity esters and kettle caramelization of the style I’m used to. Seems more like it might be an American Strong.
