Gluten FREEk is Asheville’s first gluten reduced beer. Crafted for those with a gluten intolerance who are sick of drinking beer that doesn’t taste like beer, Freek was brewed with loads of hops and a similar grain bill to Freak of Nature DIPA. This ale is designed to be big, hoppy, and uniquely Wicked Weed. Gluten FREEk contains less than 10ppm of gluten.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy yellow-gold color with a medium white head that evaporates steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney hops, citrus and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of resiny hops, grapefruit and roast malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a piney hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall, and probably one of the best reduced-gluten beers I have ever had.

Location: Draft at VBGB, 2/24/15
Aroma: The nose is fairly hoppy, with resin/pine, and some citrus and herbal notes as well
Appearance: Orange-gold colored pour with a decent sized off-white head on it
Flavor: The flavor is along the same lines, nicely bitter, with a good balancing sweetness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, with a fairly soft carbonation, and a mid-dry finish
Overall Impression: Unlike most gluten free things, I really didn't miss the gluten at all in this one. Definitely worth trying for the craft beer loving celiacs out there. Easily to superior to DFH Tweason, the Greens products and the like.

Keg at Wicked Weed, 17/02/15. Clear golden blonde with a decent off white covering. Nose is orange squash, pine, citric pith, grapefruit. Taste comprises pine needles, bitter orange, grassy notes, grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a good dose of hop bitterness. Probably the best GF beer I’ve had. Solid hop jus.

Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #54. Draft at the downstairs tasting room. Pours a clear amber color with a thin frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of herbal, spicy hops and pale, toasted malts. The taste is pale doughy malts, spicy, citrus hops. Medium bodied, slight lingering bitterness. Easily the best gluten-free / de-glutenized beers I’ve tried.
