Spiced Sour Ale

Our entry in the very popular pumpkin ale market is an eccentric one, with pumpkin flavor scarcely present, upstaged by cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger. A pleasant tartness prevails, with barrel aging providing a mellow roundness, and Brettanomyces putting the "unk" in Funky.

Pour is a clear amber with a small white head. Aroma is a big hit of spice. Lots of nutmeg and cinnamon. Flavor is again with the pumpkin pie spice. A bit thin and there is a very minor tartness that hits you after the swallow. Props for the spices being flavorful and fresh but this was a bit watery and the tart/sourness was minimal at best.

Bottle from Final Gravity. Pours hazy gold with a very slight white head. Aroma of pie spice with a little funkiness. Med body, maybe. Flavor is heavy on ginger, but other spices are detectable; it’s very lightly sour, and I’m not sure I’m getting Brett. It is a bit earthy. Seems heavy on citrus for sour, but who knows. Certain a very different pumpkin beer.

Sample at Market Garden for the CBW Collaboration Kickoff on 10/09/2015. Clear golden color with a medium off-white head that recedes gradually to a film. Aroma of cinnamon, malt and funky fruit. Light to medium body with flavors of pumpkin pie spice, malt and mildly tart fruit. The finish is spices and funky fruit. Decent overall.

ok sour ale with cinnamon a discordant flavor to the citrus. A bit cloying at the finish.

4oz draft pour at Churchkey. Poured a clear golden color with a small white head. Aroma was light spices, light pumpkin spice notes. Some light funky, dusty notes to this one. Very mild tartness. Strange.

Bottle. A- Pumpkin pie, spices, ginger, subtle funk. A- Orange color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Pumpkin, spices, slightly tart, mildly sour. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, refreshing finish. O- I figured this would be an in your face way too sour beer with overpowering pumpkin. In reality, the pumpkin pie was pretty natural tasting and not too heavy and it wasn’t way sour either. Just a nice touch of tartness. Pretty good actually.

A bit of a mess for me. Random spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Some citrus. Light tangy finish. Not my thing. Tap at Churchkey.
