Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Poured a dark reddish brown with a small foamy cream head and good lacing. Roast malts in the nose, plus a little chocolate. Bitter coffee grounds are the initial sensation in the mouth, together with dark fruit and roasted malts. Later on treacle and parkin make an appearance. Finish is fruity but with bitter undertones. A bit strange this one.

Cask at the Monks Retreat, Reading. Mahogany-black in hue with a beige head. Creosote, ribena, and smoked meat up gront. Blimey, that’s a bigger punch of flavour than I expected from this brewer. Coal fire and more blackcurrant follows, with the blackcurrant leading the way by the end. Can’t imagine the average Spoon’s punter liking this but I was quite impressed. Verdict: hell, yeah!

Cask, on gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol October 2015. Dark brown in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Toasty malts, a touch of berry fruit sweetness, tangy milk chocolate and a moderately dry finish. Good.
