In order to obtain a beer like no other, we have been adding whole sour cherries to our lambic for generations.
Our meeting with American importer Charles Finkel in the 1970s revolutionised the fruit beer segment. Charles convinced us to export our old kriek to the United States by boat. What we had not thought of is that the movement of the waves would reactivate the fermentation process and cause the corks to pop during the trip. It was like something out of The Adventures of Tintin. To prevent that from happening, we therefore developed an alternative production method for our kriek. We use fresh, not from concentrate, unsweetened cherry filtrate which we blend with lambic that is at least one year old before fermenting & macerating for up to 3 days and pasteurising the whole batch. So the corks don't pop.

Red coloured with weak foam, which disapeared very quick. In aroma a little bit of cherries. In taste there is connection between sweetness and sour coming from cherries. Reminds me cider a little bit. High carbonated. Correct lambic.

Fles, thuis. Donker rood, roze schuim. Kunstmatige kersensmaak, fruitella, aspartaam/zoetstof. Erg zoet met een onprettige overgang naar een zure afdronk. Body medium tot vol. Te zoet en teveel kunstmatige smaak.

0.25 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, bottled in July 2015. Clear, deep pinkish red with a thin, fluffy, slowly diminishing, pinkish head. Sweetish, fruity aroma of cherry juice and raspberry sherbet powder. Sweet, minimally sourish taste of cherry juice and raspberry sherbet powder, followed by a short, sweet and minimally tart finish. Medium body, Slightly creamy and minimally astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Again not really good, these sweet, sugary fruit-’lambics’ taste too artificial and are way off balance.

Clear, dark ruby pour, with a soft and tall pink head. Smells of fresh as well as mashed, fermented cherries. The taste is similar, maybe a bit more sweet than was expected and with a lactic acid taste to the mix, on top of a pleasant sourness.

25cl bottle @ Chez Sophie. Pours pinkish red with a pink head. Vibrant cherry aroma with the slightest hint of oak splinters. Taste is massive tart cherries, smooth, rich and deeply flavoursome. A classic.

10th Sep 2015. 75cl bottle, cork and caped: shared at home with a young cousin who likes "Fruit Beers". I quite like this, not too sweet, not too sour or sharp either. Red bodied with a weak pink topping. Cherry and Marzipan in the nose and flavour. Pleasant without really upsetting your taste buds, you know what’s coming.
