Old Virginia Winesap is the second varietal from Albemarle CiderWorks and makes a notable contribution to our revival of traditional American ciders. It is spicy, floral, and fruity, slightly tart with a lingering finish. It pairs well with white meats, fish, poultry and a wide variety of foods. The virtues of this apple are described on the back label:

Winesap apples have been grown in Virginia since Colonial times. William Coxe in 1817 called it "one of our best cider fruits" and "much esteemed as a good eating apple. It produces a cider that is vinous, clear and strong."

From a tasting flight at Albemarle CiderWorks. Poured a clear, very pale, almost clear yellow color with no head at all. Apple comes through on this one, very light - very mild sweet apple notes, alcohol. Mild tartness in this one.

Bottle sample at the source. Clear golden yellow color, still. Nice aroma of earthy apple skins. Taste is earthy, minerally, fruity. Very tasty.

Musty, slightly funky overripe apple aroma. Crystal clear pale yellow, no visible carbonation.Stingingly sour and considerably dry apple flavor. Fizzy. Not for me.

Capped 750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a crystal clear vibrant light golden color. Thin white head that quickly fades. Aroma of earthy and tart apples. The taste is tart apples, earthy notes and then an even more tart finish. Medium bodied. Very tart overall, but still a good cider.
