Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a semi-dark brown color with a finger’s worth of white to eggshell white foamy head. Some clingy lace.
The aroma had sweet and roasty coffee tones bold and up front. I guess this is supposed to be a dunkelweizen, but where’s the banana esters in this? There’s a touch of sweet malted wheat and far underneath there’s a little bit of some clove spice.
The flavor was moderately sweet through the wheat and coffee tones (like they used espresso bean, I’m assuming). Leans more towards the coffee roast and sweetness in the aftertaste and has a damp sweet sort of finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Sturdy carbonation. ABV felt fine. Mostly smooth along my tongue.
Overall, dunkelweizen? Not really, but if anything, I dig the idea. I’m guessing the German weizen yeast that they may have used didn’t really chemically react the way they wanted it to with the coffee, not sure.
