On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is pretty laid back, with notes of toasted nuts and dry cocoa. Flavour is certainly sweeter than the nose suggests, with notes of sweetened chocolate, light dusty toasted nuts, banana and some caramel. Nothing like an authentic dunkelweizen, but still well-made and enjoyable.

Draught at the brewpub
Hazy dark amber to brown color with small head. Mild aroma, sweetish, some caramel. Round mouthfeel; quite nice caramel flavor, the wheat is not evident, but a light roasted malt touch is very pleasant here; it has a dusty character typical of Danish beers; quite strong bitterness; fruity esters are almost absent; this is not your typical Dunkelweizen (Imperial), yet it’s a quite good beer.

Draught at Kamikaze. Dark brown, almost black, thin lacy head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, tobacco, light phenols, a touch of cabbage. Flavor is chocolate fudge, earth, light coffee, some berries. Nice fine carbonation. Well balanced, not very German, but very chocolately and tasty and good bitterness.

Char and walnut nose. Opaque brown, headless. Powerfully sour, black currants and walnuts. Musty oak finish.Alcohol not noticeable. I don’t see how this could be a dunkelweizen. I would guess it is one of those sour style porters.

My wife sent this one on a trip to Portland. Now this is my kind of porter. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with orange undertones and a huge creamy brown head that lingered forever and left some lacing. The aroma was faint cocoa and cola. The flavor was Baker’s chocolate, vanilla, nut and molasses. The finish was medium length cocoa and molasses. Fairly full bodied and creamy. Nicely done.

Bomber from Total Wine West Richmond, VA. Pours a dark hazy brown with a thin tan head that fades quickly. Aroma of sweet chocolate malts. Almost like tootsie rolls. Weird. Caramel, cocoa, a faint bit of roast. Similar taste. Sweet malts, caramel, milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts a bit of a nutty note. Medium bodied. Weird one.

Bomber pours a nice looking mahogany with tan head. The aroma is dark roasted malts, coffee, a touch of chocolate, dark fruity esters and earthiness. It offers up pleasing flavors of dark roasted malts and some chocolate brownie and then moving into a bit of dark chocolate, a firm layer of earthiness, some molasses and a touch of spicy black licorice near the finish. Tasty brew!
