This is a beer brewed in Amsterdam by our American friends from Marz Brewing, Chicago, and named after the neighbourhood where their own brewery is based. Unsurprisingly, there is a heavy American influence here, which means lots of hops, American hops. Nonetheless, their bitterness is beautifully balanced with the equally significant amount of malt a barley wine naturally requires. There is plenty of roasted and caramalt in the rich malt base of this deep, dark, glowing beauty. This American barley wine has a full, soft, rich but very balanced taste. To top it all off, there is a rich, full, creamy layer of foam.

Bottle shared by Sjogro. Bright amber with small white head. Lots of brown sugar, sweet nuts, very herbal with bitter French herbs and green tea. Almonds, quite some yeast on the nose but in the aroma it’s overpowered by the sweeter notes. Some sweet tea, honey, peach yoghurt. Taste is medium sweet with a matching medium vegetal bitterness. Over medium bodied with low carbonation. Decent for the style.

Bottled@Arendsnest, Amsterdam. Deep amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is ripe fruits, alcohol, sweet malts and some mild fruity and floral notes to it. Flavour is fruity, alcoholic, some ripe fruits, mild toffee, some rye bready notes. OK, apart from the big strong booziness to it.

33 cl bottle @ De Arendsnest, Amsterdam. BBE 01/2016 Aroma is sweet and heavy with resiny notes and ripe fruits. Also sweet-n-harsh malt. Flavour has resiny malt, woody tones, some minerals and fruity hops. Also menthol tones after some sips. ’t IJ house aroma is not present. Rather sweet and very American. Actually in blind tasting I would say this is a typical (hoppy) BW from USA.

Bottle from Burg Bieren, batch 291 BB somewhere in 2016, large sample. Clear copper color, big frothy light brown head. Aroma of caramel, touch of roast and burnt caramel, bit piney and grapefruity hops, soft fruity. Soft sweet in taste, soft bitterness, malty body. Had this fresh as well, when it was way more hoppy. Now it seems it has toned down to an American Strong Ale type of beer. Quite nice stuff.
