An historic specialty of the city of Bamberg, this type of beer is based on an old German legend. An accidental fire in a small regional brewery exposed the stored malt to the smoke for several hours. Because the brewer did not have the money to afford a new batch of malt, he was forced to use the smoked malt in his beer production. To his surprise, the townspeople loved the newly created beer; which in return became a new beer style in Germany. During the production of our smoked lager, we use a beechwood-smoked malt from a famous German malt house. This dark brown lager gives off a smoky and meat-like aroma. The complementary flavor follows the aroma characteristics with a balancing blend of smoke and malt along with a slight bitterness.

Draft at the source. Dark amber color, off white head. Aroma of smoked meat. Taste starts sweet then bitter, clean finish. Interesting.

Draft. Light smoke and lactic barley malt aroma. Dark amber with moderate head. Sweet barley malt flavor - only a hint of smoke. Not a bad beer but was disappointed that the smokiness was so subdued.

Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #46. Draft at the brewery. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin fizzy tan head. Fair head retention. The aroma smells exactly like the summer sausage I was eating in my hotel room last night. That and a mild bit of fruitiness. The taste is smoke, caramel malts, mild fruits. Thin-medium bodied.
