Continental style lager enjoyed throughout Europe. Less hoppy than Pilsner and very drinkable. Light color. Balanced with Bavarian hops.

Bottle: Golden pour with a fizzy white head. Smells dry and floral with some lager malt to make it lightly sweet. My first sip is sweet and malty with a lighter floral presence. As it progresses, it gets drier with more florals and a bit bready. Hard to be satisfied with this... again, not my favorite style either.

Bottle. Canned corn and green beans dominate both the aroma and flavor. Clear yellow/gold body with rapidly fading white head. Vegetal aroma along with some hints of toffee and husky grains. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and less than lightly bitter. It finishes about the same as it starts. Medium body with a buttery texture. Flat carbonation. A totally forgettable beer that borders on being a total mess.

Bottle from brewery. Light malt aroma (also a burnt rubber aroma - apparently must be something with their bottling as all their lighter bottled beers have this aroma). Golden yellow with small head. Creamy malt flavor - decent body. A nice beer especially for the style.

2004 bottle from Hop and Leaf. First of all letβs clear things up, Helles beer, by definition does NOT have little flavor to talk about. It is supposed to have a light body, not light on the flavor. My pour was clear and filtered looking, weak golden-yellow, whispy white head, mostly dissipating. Could stand to have a good deal more head retention, less filtration and a darker burnished copper hue to it. Aroma of lightly sour yeast, lightly toasted grains and some corn-like notes, though that may just be the yeast. Flavor is of a very apparent German sour yeast, with notes of pils malt (honey) and a some lightly stale apple flavor on the finish. Fairly crisp as well. Lightly watery with low hops apparency. Could stand a good deal more malt. Just because this is a light colored lager, dosent mean it has to be light flavored. Some of the most flavorful beers Iβve had have been from this style. If they would market this as a plain American pale lager, I would be more impressed. This dosent cut it for a beer of this style.

Bottle. Clear light gold color with a smallish white head that diminished rather quickly. No real aroma. Flavor similar the the aroma. Thin body. Nothing special here.

Bottled, thanks SpringsLicker! Aroma of wet hay and yeast. Pale golden with brief head. Medium sweet and nicely rounded, but with cellary apple tones.

Oringinally rated as "Calhouns Velas Helles" 3/22/03: Acquired via trade. The guy with the funny hat on the label is worth the price of admission. Billed as a "light German style lager" which doesn't really tell you much. Pours a gold color with a medium off-white head and mild effervescence. No lacing. Very light and sweet aroma of honey and even a little bubblegum. Very light-bodied with an unimposing hops flavor, with some malt and citrus as well. Finish is lightly sweet. Complexity is not a factor but this stuff is insanely easy to drink.
