We just released a draft-only batch called Engelberg Pilsener, named after Mt.Angel. It’s German-style: light, dry and full of hoppy flavor. We made a simple single malt (Canadian pilsener malt) and single hop (Mt. Angel-grown tettnanger) recipe using a Munich lager yeast. The finished beer came out remarkably dry so for the second batch set to be released around the third week of July we coaxed just a bit more mouthfeel and residual sugar out of it and used a different hop variety, hallertauer mittlefruh. The beer is currently on tap in the tasting room and at a handful of bars around town. When the second batch is ready both will be on hand to taste side-by-side.

Editor’s note: used to be all-tettnanger, now is tettnanger and hallertauer.

On tap at the brewery. Clear golden with medium white head. Malty, bit grainy, some grassy notes, tad sweet with bitterish finish. Nice classic pilsner.

Poured from the tap. Clear pale gold with small white head. Mild grass hops and fairly bland overall malt profile. Mediocre.

Sampled from the tap at the Portland location. Pours a clear pale straw yellow with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is hay forward with a herbal grass note and straw backing. Flavor has lots of dry grass and a light herbal note with a backbone of straw and hay.

Tap at Hop Haven. Nice. Dry and wheaty, flour, lots of grain, little bit of lemon. Very refreshing. Something herbal in the aroma.

On tap at the brewery pours crisp straw topped with a white head. Nose is great crisp refreshing grassy citrus hops and some cereal malts. Tatse is more of the nice crisp notes a well balanced hop to grain.

Draft pour pint at Special Brews, a day after visiting the brewery for the first time, and not trying this. How the hell did they make this so good? I have so much appreciation for a brewery taking a less appealing style of beer and making it awesome. Light golden pour with a rocky foam head. Sweet lemon aroma that slightly overpowers the grain. Light body, but full of flavor. Soft grains, dominated by a nice fruit character. Long, lingering crisp flavor. Quintessential pilsner. Loved it.
