There is a tradition in Germany of naming this style with the same last 4 letters....ATOR. Legend has it that Franciscan monks first brewed a strong beer to sustain them during their fasting, and called it "Salvator" meaning "saviour". Doppelbocks are strong - alcohol, malt flavors and fruity esters dominate, hops are gently balanced, and rich raisiny full bodied character is always there.

Reviewed from notes.
Poured into a tall tulip.
Appearance: dark brown color with some light red hues along the sides with a two and a half fingers of off-white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: mixed apples sweetness, dark fruits, dark breadiness, subtle earthy hops, some light woody spices
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a malty, fruity sweet to underlying spicy woody/earthy quality; finishes malty dry with earthy to bready tones
Texture: medium bodied, somewhat sessionable, great smoothness with a sturdy dryness about it
Overall: I say a nicely done Doppelbock I would return to.
