Elderberry is a common fruit used in wine making. Its unique tart qualities make it an ideal fruit to use in the cider making process. Much of making a good cider is finding the perfect balance between acid, sugar and tannins. With Original Sin Elderberry, the Company believes it has achieved this balance. There is a long history of Elderberries being used in cider production. In fact, in the 1822 book ‘The American Orchardist’, it suggests adding Elderberries to give “cider a fine colour as well as flavor.”

Gentle break from the latest sugar bombs, reminds me of my first elderberry beer way way way back when turbodog and purple Haze was the entire craft section in the supermarket. Very light and elderberryry.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark fuchsia color with a small pink head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was tart berries with a bit of bread and cider. The flavor was tart, sweet and a bit bready with cider and vague berries. Medium length finish. Medium body. A bit disappointing.

Draught at Beer Mongers, Portland
Dark blood color with pink head. Pleasant drink because it’s fairly sweet, with some character from the elderberries. Lightly tart, this may be the only component reminding that it’s a cider.
Nice.

OK, another fruity cider tick. Smell is a little farmy surprisingly. Color is purplish red. Not overly sweet so it lack that soda pop feel so common with many fruit ciders. Good cider sizzle. Not bad overall, yes a little dry but does not have any dried out cider negativities.

Dark reddish-purple color with a medium off-white head that evaporates steadily to an outer ring. Spotty lacing. Aroma of berries and apples. Light-bodied with a mildly tart berry character with some sweet spice in the background. The finish is fruity with an elderberry aftertaste. Okay for what it is.
