Draftt at the source. Pretty much black, thick beige head. Aroma of pine and cocoa, coffee grounds. Taste is bitter roast, like a bitter coffee with burnt licorice. A bit unbalanced.

The roast and hops clash hugely in this brew, it doesn’t cone together well at all. Pours black with good head and lacing. Some citrus and very sharp roast, almost burnt in aroma. Very bitter and astringent on finish. Tap at brewpub.

On tap at the brewpub it is a coffee brown color with a slight head. The aroma is hot chocolate even tho it’s not hot. The taste is strong bitter and seems more like grapefruit then either coffee or chocolate. Hmm

On draft the brewpub. Pours a dark cola with an ecru head. Aroma of coffee. Flavors of tobacco and grapefruit rind. Bitter roast finish.

Draft at the brewery. Poured a dark brown, almost black color with a light tan head. Aroma was light roasted coffee, with some notes of toffee and caramel. Sweet malt notes, some dark chocolate notes, with a lot of burnt coffee notes. I liked the aroma, and how easy it was to drink, but it was a bit too bitter than I’d like. I’d probably try this one again down the road.

Charred oak, rubber. Cola brown, thick tan head, good lacing. Charcoal and burned toast flavor. Light body, astringent. A fair amount of flavor for a 3.7%, but lacking the hop presence of a black IPA.

750 mL bottle from the brewery, opened 8/30/14. Pours a near black with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, earth, chocolate, treacle, green herbal hops. The taste is coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, herbal hops. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness.

4oz pour at the brewery pours an oily caramel with some spitty white head. Nose is ok, a little juicy, some apple, poached pear, a little grape. Flavor is very rubbery, toast crumbs, soap, pine, cleaning solvent. Oily finish.
