40 Mile is our flagship IPA and is named after the number of miles Jack Jouett raced to warn Thomas Jefferson and his state legislators that Cornwallis had ordered their capture. Jack Jouett’s ride is legendary in Virginia and put Three Notch’d Road on the map as a central story in the fight for our Country’s independence. Jack left his mark on history, how will you leave yours? This West Coast Style IPA is hopped with an abundance of American hop varieties giving it a tropical, peachy, pineapple flavor with big citrus, grapefruit, tangerine notes in the nose and in the finish. The light, crisp malty body allows the complex hop flavors to stand out, and the subtle bitterness makes this IPA a refreshing, easy drinking, delicious beer.

Draft at R.F.D. Clear golden body with small fluffy head. Faint aroma becomes a little fuller in the taste. Closer to a NW APA, but still good, gentle bitterness and flavorful. Malts allowed to take a co-starring role here.

Can from Total Wines, Sterling VA. Amber in colour, with a decent, white, head. Plenty of floral hops, orange and pineapple fruits, suggestion of pine, and sweetish malts, before a dry, hoppy finish. Good.

Very nicely done. Some mango and pineapple and not so much bitterness. Amber pour with good head and lacing. Light bitterness but pretty clean finish. Nice stuff. Can.

Can. Pours lightly hazy corn apple, large off white head, great lacing. Aroma is a bit perfume, pine, orange, pineapple. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus bitter. Light body, a bit oily. Odd one. Not bad.

Crystal clear light copper coloured body with a bit of a bronze glow, but a very ugly, soapy lacing atop a miniscule amount of foam after dying down initially from four centimetres tall, but a literally crystal clear colour. Aroma of fresh hops, light apricots, oranges, subtle malt and a touch of grass - not too much going on here. Light-bodied; Strong herbal flavour up front with a big presence of fruit - especially oranges and peaches, but a very subtle hop note and not much malt either. Aftertaste is refined and mild with the sweetness noticeable, some of the herbs, but very little of anything else. Overall, a decent beer, but doesn’t show too well as an IPA, since there aren’t many discernable hops, only a touch of malt and little complexity. Not really worth purchasing, unless you want a can for something (train, etc) and have had all the other options. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 02-August-2015 for US$1,79 sampled at home in Washington on 08-January-2016.

Draft at Spacebar. Poured a golden yellow color with a small white head. Aroma was decent hop, nice light floral and some citrus. Not overly bitter, which was pretty tasty.

Can. It’s a hazy, golden-orange beer with a small, off-white head leaving some lacing. There’s quite a lot of grapefruit in the aroma, with some pine cones and a touch of orange. Rather low on malty flavors and aroma. There’s a nice bitterness in the flavor, but I wouldn’t mind if it was beefed up a bit more. Orange zest, grapefruit and pine cones. It’s medium to full-bodied, rather dry, and with a nice carbonation level. Lasting finish. There’s some weird feeling on the palate, but just a little bit, nothing really harmful, but I deducted one point. Can’t really pinpoint what it is. Anyway, it’s a fine beer that I wouldn’t mind drinking more of. 150619
