This is not your typical fruit beer and definitely not what you expect when you see its black color and tan head. This beer is extremely light in body with notes of chocolate and roasted malt and just a touch of strawberry flavor to balance the astringency; finishing clean and crisp. If you dislike fruit beer and dark beers – you need to give this beer a try!

Had this at the Summer NOVA BrewFest. Poured a dark brown color with a bit of translucency, with notes of strawberries, caramel notes. Flavor was actually light strawberries, a touch of chocolate, bitter notes. Pretty drinkable for such a hot summer day.

On tap Capital Ale House in Harrisonburg. Pours dark brown with no head but huge nose of strawberry shortcake. Tastes of hints of strawberry with dark chocolate, coffee, earth. A touch thin very easy drinking.

Draft sample at the 2nd Annual Top of the Hops Charlottesville, VA beer festival, 9/10/11. Pours a dark hazy reddish brown with a large frothy head. Good head retention. Aroma of big strawberry and citrus notes. Smells like a fruit roll-up. No hint this was ever a shcwarzbier. The taste is strawberries, a faint bit of roasted malts and chocolate. Medium bodied.
