We are excited to share a single origin lager with you that was brewed with an organically grown heirloom barley from the Finnish Arctic called Balder.
In the darkest days of Winter we packed our bags and traveled by plane, 4x4 and skis across a frozen ocean to visit Pehkolan Mallastamo, the world's northernmost malthouse.
Once there, we gently malted the Balder in hopes it might give us the most perfect lager. Ever.
Throughout the 1940's and 50's, Balder was the most prized malting barley in the Nordics. It was originally discovered in the late 1800's on the island of Gotland and was catalogued as an official landrace variety several years later.
Tasting notes of dried lavender, sweet cloudberry, and slate.

Reviewed from notes.
Can to lager glass.
Appearance: clear yellow color with a two and a half fingers of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: clean floral to sweet freshly cut grassy hops intertwine then a very nice clean bready malt backbone comes in underneath for some balance
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet floral to sweet berry-ish quality flanked by that malty tone I smelled; finishes sweet through the floral to berry tone and malty notes
Texture: light to medium bodied - leaning more towards light bodied; very sessionable; very smooth along the tongue with nothing bothersome
Overall: a very nicely done "modernized" pilsener I would welcome again.
