bottle shared by beerlando, thanks! Pours gold with a medium white head. Aroma is sweet cherry and pineapple. Flavor is sour apple, some grassy malts, and lots of off flavors in the finish. It’s age is showing, but there is still some good stuff there.

Very dirty reddish brown pour. Lots of sediment. Beer exploded on me a bit from over carbonation. Lots of sour fermented fruits and breads in nose and taste. Rated 2/10/03

Thanks to EDA for pouring this at the Captain Lawrence gathering - light strawberry blonde pour, with a huge, foamy head - yeasty, semi-tart aroma of (very) overripe apples and pears - this beer isn’t as much tart as it is acidic, much like the fruits present in the aroma - the sourness is quite mild, especially for a flemish sour with so much age on it - a slight citrus quality couples with the rather mild tart/sour character pretty well - a hint of white wine, tannic flavors near the end, that wash out a very faint apple sweetness - good, but I was expecting amazing.

(Bottle: 75 cl) Very orange beer with visible impurities. Head is extremely thick, almost like whipped cream. First impression of the flavor is sour (like a gueuze) but underneath I definitely sense the added candi-sugar. Furhermore it has a distinct, dry bitterness. This beer has this musty, foxed way about it, which is quite typical for the small Belgians. 091102

Provided by JCW and shared with Brodie and BelgianGirl. Cloudy orange-red body, big creamy overflowing head. Enticing, complex aroma with cherries, caramel, apple, a touch of cinnamon, and white grapes in addition to earthy hops notes. A bit sour. The flavor was no less complex than the aroma, with white grape, raspberry vinaigrette and toast mingling with sour musty earth and other assorted sweet rotting fruits. Bready. Immensely complex and satisfying with just the right amount of sourness and earth to balance the fruits and breads. I never thought I’d see this one.

2000 bottle @ the DC/VA/MD gathering compliments of Herftydrf (thanks Andre, this was quite a treat!). Even though I took the bottle in my car, on the airplane, then back in the car, then proceeded to drop it on the concrete the day of the gathering (still can’t believe it didnt break), and finally walked 13 blocks carrying it to the gathering, it still did not explode or gush or anything like that when I opened it. Just a bit of foam and then that was it. A real testament to the quality of De Dolle’s brewing. A lovely ruddy amber, with some dark browns, rusty oranges, plenty of sediment, great amount of foamy white head with little yellow flecks in it. Aroma of strong belgian yeast, just what you’d expect from De Dolle, though it seems like more of a trappist strain. Lightly sour raspberries, oranges, creme brulee and light wood notes, intertwined with soft caramel and cherry malt notes. Very pleasant, well-integrated and restrained nose. Flavor is nothing like I was expecting. Soft and malty up front, with a good candi sugar, honey sweetness followed by the fruit esters. The sourness comes towards the end, mixing with a delightfully warming alchol sensation, some dry old wood, lightly oily and a moderate dose of vinegar. But all in all, it’s nowhere near as acidic as I was expecting. The yeast is very dominant, but the yeast and sweet malt, with the dark candi sugar give it more of a Belgian Dark Strong feel at the start. Regardless, it dries out, has some good wood and vinegar notes and ends pleasingly tart. Fine stuff, and well balanced if perhaps a bit too sweet up front. This thing’s got plenty more years of aging in it (not surprisingly).
Havent updated my notes, but my score is where I feel it should. Will add my notes soon.

Bottled 10/2000 (and bought in Brussels, 11 Sept 2001)
Muddy copper color, explosive bottle. Sweet and sour aroma, cellar, wood, some vanilla. Sweet, malty, strong, light fruitness, high woodiness, some sourness. Excellent but maybe too woody (and just a bit too bitter at the end).

A very explosive beer. The color is hazy red and it has huge fast disappearing orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of wood, yeast, alcohol, and prunes, but also a sourness, as if it is too old. The flavor is acidic with notes of alcohol, red currant, grapefruit, and a dry hoppy end. The acidity draws out the mouthwater. It seems as if this beer is over the top - but it is still a very nice beer. Thanks to Mads Berg for sharing this.
