This bold and deliciously complex beer is in Imperial Buckwheat Stout aged in Tequila barrels for 13 months. Only a collection of pioneering, well seasoned, extensively traveled and passionate pub owners could come up with such a notion. A massive grain bill consisting of Pale, Munich and toasted Canadian buckwheat was blended with pearled drum-kilned barley from Chile, a generous amount of Wisconsin roasted wheat and a slug of British Crystal malts. a couple lumps of Mexican Turbinado sugar were added for good measure while we loaded the kettle with Styrian Golding hops. This carefully calculated collision of flavors, concocted over copious amounts of Orval well into the night, was laid down in fresh Tequila barrels wrangled over our southern border by the beautiful and gracious Meg Gill. We simply called the beer PNC in honor of its collaborative creators – the gothic symphony of flavors will speak for themselves. The week that PNC rolled into Paso was one to remember, but more importantly the PNC's role in the craft beer revolution should never be forgotten. Cheers to the PNC!

Pours pitch black and a brown head with short and little retention. Aroma's: boozy, roasty, (red) fruity, umami, molasses, rye bread. Retronasal it's bourbon, vanilla, boozy alcohol, sweet, a bit malt/grain, which is probably the buckwheat, and it is somewhat different than barley malt, molasses, roasty (smoked even). Flavour is full sweet but with some roasty bitterness for balance. Alcohol is warming but not too hot. Medium bodied. Prickly carbonation. Long finish, with that same grain/malt character, and moderate roasty bitter. World class as always.

Poured from the tap. Very dark brown with small beige head. Nice balance of the various barrels, lots of dark fruit and caramel malt. Great.

On tap at Apex, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is complex, with loads of tequila, brandy and bourbon barrels upfront, with a deep caramel malt and dark fruit character further back. Flavour is complex as hell, with a wonderful balance of bourbon, brandy and tequila barrel. Loads of caramel, dark dried fruit and molasses. The barrel treatment is stupendous. Complex, elegant and eminently drinkable for what it is. A clear improvement on PNC #1.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with small brown head that dissipates quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma is rich, cocoa, bourbon, figs, dates, molasses. Flavor is medium sweet and light plus bitter, lots of bourbon presence, but well integrated and not overpowering. Bit of tequila and earth on the finish. Medium plus body, creamy mouthfeel.

12 oz bottle ordered from Firestone online on Black Friday for the 25% off! Very similar to what my 2012 notes say for the original except that this has a lot of buckwheat rather than the omnipotent vanilla I got from the original. Nose is lots of bready buckwheat pancakes with background cocoa, vanilla, tequila, and bourbon.. Pitch black with a medium, lightly lacing, cinnamon tan head. Flavor is dark chocolate, moderate sweetness, buckwheat, vanilla, with hints of tequila and bourbon.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours dark brn/blk with a very slight, very transient dark tan head. Aroma is tequila and arguably chocolate. Certainly full bodied. Flavor is brandy, tequila, chocolate, burnt malt and bourbon/vanilla. It's very, very smooth. Heat is not hidden, but hardly obnoxious. Not dry, but not sugary (or not much so). Bitter with oak, heat and burnt malt. An amazing and tasty ale.

2013 Bottle shared at DACBE New Year's share. Pours a deep brown to black with almost no head. Carbonation is very low as well. Dark fruit aromas with prune, blackberry cacao nib aromas. Some port-like aromas as well. Tequila seems to have faded to the back a bit. Some leather and oak with toasted, dried vanilla and cacao nib notes. Full bodied and thick. Lingering oak, dried chocolate and warming finish.

Draft pour at Bottleworks, from their anniversary party. Glad this survived the storm! Pours black. A heavy booze aroma to this. Some chocolate. Flavor is extremely thick, with vanilla, graham cracker, chocolate, cinnamon, and cookie. Dessert stout for sure, and delicious. Late coffee addition late. Sweet, but not too sweet. Boozy, but not too boozy. Fun, and delicious.
