Brewed only once a year to keep you warm during the cold winter months, the Blanche Neige (« Snow white ») isn’t your typical wheat beer. Firstly, the level of alochol is surprising and is perceived rapidly both in the bouquet and in the mouth. The spices come through immediately, giving very little room for the usual wheat beer aromas (coriander and curaçao). Cinnamon and clove dominate and the flavours are generously well-rounded thanks no doubt to residual sugars. It is therefore a very sweet beer that is best appreciated slowly.

From a 341ml bottle on 16/11/2012. Pours an opaque golden orange with a smallish head. Has a strong aroma aroma of cloves and cinnamon. The flavour is even stronger, with a huge spiciness bitterness smacking you in the face immediately, and lingering for what seems like forever. You get more cloves and cinnamon, nutmeg, fruit cake, orange peel, with some sweet citrus fruits and little honey balancing things out. The palate is slightly oily. This is an unusual, slightly crazy, incredibly intense and quite impressive brew. A lovely Christmas sipper.

341mL bottle, pours a murky golden orange with a small ring of white head. Nose is full of clove and coriander, with some candied sugar and not really any hint of wheat. Flavour isn't overly appealing, with lots of perfume and sugary notes, not much of the aforementioned spices. Feels a little flat and dull, with very light carbonation. Way too much of the perfume and sugar, killing any complexity there might have been. Not too good.

Bottle. Cloudy orange with a small white head that’s soon less than a coat. Boozy aroma with cloves, cinnamon, cardamon, white pepper, oranges and their blossoms. Sweet and spicy with the spices very prominent but not quite overwhelming fruit and flowers. Gentle bitterness at a floral and very clove-y finish. Alcohol much less obvious than in the aroma. Given the heaviness of the spicy flavours it’s surprising that it never wears out its welcome. Perhaps needs colder weather than Melbourne.

Draught, Bateau de Nuit. Hazy straw. Thin head. Aroma is floral, pink peppercorns, and lots of hops. Spicy, sweet and fruity with coriander in the finish. Good, balanced character. Fun, tasty, very quebecois beer. Effortlessly good.

Bottle: Poured a clear bright amber color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of strong cinnamon and cloves notes is a bit surprising at first but quite enticing. Taste is a very nice mix between some strong notes of cinnamon and cloves mix in with sweet but not overly so malt backbone. Body is bit thin unfortunately with too much filtration with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed the mix of cinnamon and cloves but my biggest beef with this one is the fact that the body is a bit too thin.

(hiver 2006-07)
