We weren’t trying to be revolutionary in 2002, we just wanted to brew an interesting beer style using extra ingredients we had on hand. The resulting contribution to craft beer’s renaissance, was this rye-centric India Pale Ale. At 85 IBUs, California Sunshine Rye IPA is exceptionally well-balanced with assertive hop bitterness, a toasty, bready malt mouthfeel, and a grassy, dry finish. Enjoy our uniquely original re-imagining of a traditional English style IPA while pondering being the craft beer polymath you surely are. RyeIPA@DevilsCanyon.com

Can. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Hazy, dark gold. Film of off white head. Spicy, juicy, fusty, mandarin hop. Soft caramel. Taste is lightly spicy bitter. Nice balance by way of a toffee sweetness. Smooth palate, with a rich chew. Finishes long, fruity, zesty bitter, with that spice lingering all the way.

Keg at Mother Kelly’s, 11/06/15. Amber golden with a decent off white head that retains well. Nose is rye bread, caramel malt, bitter orange. Taste comprises orange pith, caramel malt, tangerine, candied fruit peel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close laced with hop bitterness. Decent hoppy red.

Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and crisp. Light malts bring mild sweetness. Tangy orange hops, some marmalade. Touch of lemon peel. Light finish with mild peel bitter linger. It’s fine but lacks vibrancy for a West Coast IPA, possibly not that fresh.

I picked up a bottle at Total Wine the day they got it in and drank it a couple days later. I’m not sure when this was bottled or how long it sat in the distributors warehouse, but this beer was terrible. Old, stale hop aroma with lots of caramel. Similar flavors with a hint of rye. Medium body with average carbonation. Down the drain!

Deep dark amber coloured body with a ridiculously large just off-white head, about 8 centimetres tall. Aroma of rye, specialty grains, light grassy hops and a bunch of alcohol and deep bittering notes. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rye flavour with a very deep hop note up front fading to a more earthy malt vibe and a little alcohol warmth noticeable. Aftertaste shows a ton of rye - more than the hop flavours, all with a lot of alcohol and quite a bit of earthiness. Overall, a nice rye-based IPA with a great look, just perhaps too much earthiness and rye flavours and not enough hop balance, for the style, especially. I sampled this 50 cL can purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California for US$8.99/4pack on 02-May-2013, sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 05-July-2013 - thanks Phil!

Pours copper with a large head.Nose shows grassy, piny hops along with faint apple characters. Some spicy rye too.Pretty aggressive flavours. Lots of grapefruit and pine but little else to liven things ups. Not much malt, but some toasty, spicy rye. Sharp metallic finish.Too much carbonation.
