In this year’s edition, you’ll notice a deep, rich aroma of toasty malts, anise, Belgian yeast spiciness, and a hint of cedar. The toasty, dark and roasty malt flavors combine with a soft palate - courtesy of specialty dark wheat and barley malts. The body is fairly light for a beer with such a high gravity. There is a pleasant, lingering bitterness, so you know it’s part of the Stone family. This ale was brewed with a specialty Belgian yeast that we’re really liking here at Stone...it’s the same one we used for brewing the Stone 03.03.03 Vertical Epic Ale. And as with the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale, all the spicy, deep, and wonderfully funky aromas and flavor characteristics in this beer come as a result of nothing more than malt, hops, water and yeast!

Super dark brown body with a dense thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, light spices, pungent caramel and alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavours with the malt and spices coming out first, tucked away with some cherries and fruity characters. Aftertaste shows alcohol, light spices, a decently fresh hop flavour and ending with alcohol and sugars. Overall, a good beer - perhaps a bit too deep and dark for a dubbel, but still a good offering. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Kybecca in Fredericksburg, Virginia on 12-June-2010 in a quadruple vertical tasting (06-09) of Vertical Epics with Phil (haddon90) at home in Manassas, VA.

22 oz bottle generously sent to me by alagnak. Pour is a cola deep brown, murky with a 1/2 inch tan head that falls fast. Aroma of rich slight roast maltiness with a touch of slight cherry sweetness. As it warms some, quite a bit of esters from the yeast come out - bubble gum, light tropical fruit. Full, engaging nose. Taste is the mild char roast malt, mixed with the tropical fruit sweet element of the nose. The yeast bubble gum features as well in the longish finish. Palate is medium bodied, very soft and creamy with a lingering yeasty sweet finish. Nice one, thanks Chris.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark tan head. The aroma was sweet and spicy with notes of licorice and fruits. The alcohol showed through somewhat prominently on the nose. The flavor was dark malts, molasses, ripe fruits, dry chocolate and a touch of wood and smoke. The finish was medium length and was dry with a touch of licorice. Nice.

Another big thanks to Travis (Dunedin Brewery) for this bottle. Pours copper, with beige head. Aroma is fruity, notes of vanilla and dark fruits (cherry) malts. Taste was amazingly nice, well aged. A lot more complex than the vertical ’05. Loads of nice dark fruits (cherry / prune) and sweet candi sugar.

On tap. Pours a dark brown with a large, off-white head. Great lacing. Aroma of coriander, dark malts, caramel and a bit of candi sugar. Taste is malty, coriander, some oxidation, hint of bananas, and some alcohol. Light bubbles and creamy.

From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours dark brown with an orange glare and a small lacing tan head. Spiced and slight roasted malt aroma. Fruity and mailty flavour - goes into a smooth chocolate flavour. Remains smooth and is joined by a mild spice note into the finish. Lovely.

Bottled at Petalax Beer Festival. Dark ruby with small head. Fruity, lightly yeasty nose with some coffee. Fruity and phenolic, slimmer than expected. A vast array of flavour is on offer, but aside from medicinal none demand much attention, so the flavour stay streamlined and without much depth. Perfectly correct, but as it does not offer something extra in either complexity, intensity nor drinkability it gets no real love from me. Just my acceptance.

22 oz Bottle from the Brickskeller. Pours an almost black color. Aroma is roasted malts with touches of chocolates, cherry, and other dried fruits. The flavor was of dark fruits, malts, with touches of vanilla in there with some alcohol in there as well.

Stone Half Vertical Tasting, Popeye’s. Very dark brown color, cherries, oranges, dark chocolate and sharp alcoholic nose. Liquorice, milk chocolate, brandy, oranges in the mouth. Finish is a bit rough and alcohol comes through too much. Needs more time in the cellar.
