Nut brown in color and lightly hopped with Willamette, this beer is dominated by a pleasing caramel finish that is darn close to heavenly. 5.2% ABV.
The Almost Heaven Amber Ale is named after John Denver’s ode to West Virginia, Country Roads. The picture on the tap handle is the Mountain State Brewing Co logo. It shows the peaks and summits of the Allegheny Highlands, part of the vast Appalachian Mountains, where our Brewhouse is located.

Can. An unclear, dark amber colored beer with a minimal sized off-white head. Rather bready, caramel aroma, with some fruityness. Citrus hints. It’s medium bodied, quite dry on the palate, yet with sweetness in the flavor. Nice, soft carbonation level. Caramel, bread, nuts and some generic fruityness and a faint touch of orange in the flavor. Some bitterness too, lasting for a while. Not much to write home about this one. 150618

Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a red-orange color with a small foamy beige head that faded and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was tart and bitter vague fruity hops. The flavor was tart and bitter fruity hops with a bit of orange and perfume. Medium length finish. Medium body. Meh.

Draft at the Morgantown location. Pours a hazy amber color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of nutty notes and caramel. The taste is toasted caramel malts. Almost no bitterness and way too sweet. Medium bodied.

On tap at Gene’s in Morgantown. Big glass for $2.50. Darker and slightly more hazy than the ubiquitous pale yellow american lager. Slight aroma of fruit and tartness which carries over to the taste experience. Fruity and rotten weird in it’s own friendly way. Barely any carbonation. Not too much hops but certainly a flavor impression like no other amber ale I’ve tasted. This is surprising because there really is no hop bitter bite in this brew. Rather enjoyable to an extent. Unique and a very different kind of micro ale. Glad to have had the chance to taste this special beer.
