Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Bottle at The Rake, Thanks Hughie for this one. Gold, lager malt/cereal on aroma. OK in mouth. Some metallic carbonation. Some dryness on finish. Sweetish cereally lager.2.8 early lager rating. clear gold colour lasting white head. clean lager. a little thickness from the abv. its clean fine. light sweetness. some hop in the finish ok.

bottled, on several occasions. Clear golden colour, nice large white head. Malty nose. Intensively malty with a good amount of hops, resulting in a pleasant bitter-sweet character. Hints of fruit and hay.

Bottle, as Maerzen Export Blond to golden, hazy body. White, creamy head. Aroma of honeym caramel malts, bit hops and some yeast. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet, somehat citric flavour. Not bad, bit balance is certainly not very good.

Bottle 33cl. @ home.Clear light to medium yellow orange color with a average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, grain, hay, paper. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and light light bitter with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20081106]
