Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Bottled. Deep golden colour, with a small foamy white head. Aroma is grassy, sweet maltyness with mild grains and some herbal notes. Flavour is quite muh the same in a quite nice balance. Also some mild saltwatery notes in the finish as well. Solid Märzen.

Ein Bier, das ich vor einigen Jahren einmal hatte und offenbar ein alten Exemplar. Daher verfasste ich damals diesen Text: Ich verstehe den Hype nicht, der um das Tannenzäpfle gemacht wird. So finde ich dieses Eiszäpfle, das kein Eisbock, sondern ein einfaches deutsches Märzen ist, nicht sonderlich berauschend (vom Geschmack her). Es ist recht süß und der getreidige Körper wirkt etwas muffig. Ich brauche es nicht mehr. Heute finde ich es nicht mehr so übel. Es ist ein klassisches deutsches Märzen mit einem intensiven, teifgründigen Körper, der etwas au wirkt, aber dafür Charakter und einen soliden Kern hat.

Bottle. A two-finger white head sits on top of a clear, golden body. Fruity-sweetish aroma with pale malts, grass and hay. The flavor has a decent bitterness to keep the pale malts company. Some grass, spicyness and hay as well. Medium body, pleasant carbonation. Some bitterness in the else fruity-sweet finish. Not bad, but a bit on the sweet side. 111001
